The Audacity of Being Single

Updated: Apr 14, 2023

By Cristina Conti, Matchmaker

During a database interview, we ask our prospective Bachelors and Bachelorettes, “Are you single?” Although this may seem like an obvious question as they are sitting in a Matchmakers office, we frequently confront reluctance from the person to answer “yes.” Some even defensively reply, “Why would I be here if I wasn’t single?”

We ask this question to add a layer of protection for our Clients to ensure the pure intentions of their Matches: that they are there for “the right reasons” @TheBachelor. A “yes” is the only way that we can match them. To all those ashamed of answering “yes,” put your heart at rest; being single is a courageous act.

Too often people either stay in unhealthy relationships out of convenience or settle. Even if he splits the household chores with you or occasionally brings you out to dinner, these reasons fail to justify your relationship. Romantic relationships should be inspiring, loving, energizing, and eventually, life-giving. Any partnership less than that means that you have settled, and settling hurts.

You hurt the other person as a result of the inherent dishonesty that you must maintain to stay in the relationship. You hurt yourself as your partner bars you from experiencing the true love that you were made to enjoy. Instead, open yourself to the incredible gift of love that God wants to give you.

When you take the grand step of calling someone your boyfriend or girlfriend, you should want to shout it from the rooftops. Until then, we applaud you for remaining single in a place that sometimes treats these brave fighters as subpar or a menace to romantic couples. Our advice is to keep on seeking, and you will find. We can help... it is what we do.
